Back from India

Well it ended up being more than a week and more of an adventure then I was planning. India is an amazing place and a bit of a shock to someone like myself who has only really seen developed, I guess rich nations. The poverty is very shocking and it is impossible not to notice as there are poor on every corner, every street, sleeping the the rubble of the decaying buildings and new construction.

We stayed in the business district of Mumbai which is what they call the suburban area and so transport by taxi is very common and most taxi's know at least the suburb they are in, our's got lost in the surburb next to it. There are new buildings inbetween rubble, old crumbling buildings and new construction. There is constant construction going on and in our nice hotel we heard drilling all the time.

On Chloe's suggestion I went on a guided tour of the city so that I at least got out a bit. I was reluctant as I was feeling unwell most of the time and the job was very very stressful so just wanted no more stress. I'm glad I did and it wasn't so bad though everywhere you went there was a constant flow of beggars or people trying to sell you things, anything.

I went to Ghandi's house and saw a history of his life which was fascinating. I saw the Hanging Gardens which was a big garden, and another garden with views of the bays and a big shoe. There was a huge arch called the gateway of India and opposite it the Taj Mahal Hotel which is built to look like the Taj Mahal. The other interesting place was the famous communial washing where hundreds of thousands (maybe millions) of people come to wash there clothes. It's called Dhobi Ghat (Washing Place) and it's amazing to see. I don't think my photo's do it justice.

I will have to get a flickr account or simular like Chloe and put up the photo's I took. Unfortunately I only had one tourist day so it's not that many photo's and don't really do the place justice. The poverity is just shocking, one can't explain it, so many people. It makes me sad to think about it, there is so huge a difference between the have's and have not's.

Well, that's all I got for now, really want to catch up and see Ryan and Ling now there here and Mum will be here at the end of the month so lots happening.

P.
