Sun Ultra 5
Well the other week I came up with this crazy idea to buy a Sun box, I actually had it then bid for one on ebay. I paid £45 for a Sun Ultra 5 which is a 270mhz Sparc with 128mb RAM and a 8GB HD, pretty cheap really. I got it for 2 reasons, one to learn SUN and sparc and two to have a box to run as a webserver/image server to post photo's on that I plan to link from here. Knowing me and building boxes who knows when it will be ready. I'm thinking I'll use dynamic dns to be able to link to it as I don't have a static IP.
Well I've had it at work for the last week or so trying to find time to set it up as it's came without a monitor and I don't have one at home. I could also use a serial console connection but I'd have to buy that too so hadn't gotten around to it. Well on Friday I was asked how long it was staying around so I thought I'd better work something out. Also work had a bunch of old monitors they where throwing out on monday still in the new half of the building so I asked if I could have one.
They told me if I could find one that worked I could take it. So off to test the monitors, I was told I needed one that ran at 1280x1024 so I had to be lucky as most of them were old 15" ones. I found a 17" and so tried that one first, voila first time. So with monitor and sun box I was ready to take it home.
After asking nearly everyone would lives kinda in my direction I eventually ask Martin (who's going to Amsterdam with me) to drop me off. Funily he lives around the corner from work so it's not really on his way but being a nice guy he helps me out.
Well now I just need to install Solaris 10 and setup apache, can't be too hard can it? Only need to find some time.
